Branded signing of the season, Sunderland’s Granit Xhaka has already revolutionised a young Black Cats side, from leadership to experience, the newly made captain has certainly left a mark on his Premier League return.
For any promoted side, survival is key, and to do that, the team must operate under a strict, organised structure with a level head at the main.
Here, Transfer News Blitz writer Ellie McDevitt looks at why the Swiss veteran has been so important this season.
Captain
On arrival from Bayern Leverkusen, the 33-year-old was made club captain, relieving Dan Neil of his duties, a decision uncommon for Sunderland.
On this, Xhaka said: “It makes me very proud to be captain.
“I think you grow up to be a leader, my role will not be just on the pitch, it will be off too.”

Defensive powerhouse
The main strength Xhaka has offered this season has been his defensive attributes.
The Swiss midfielder already finds himself in the top five for duels won this season, winning a total of 67 duels to date.
However, the former Arsenal man now finds himself just one yellow card from suspension with only 11 games played.
Although being 33, physicality has proven no challenge for the captain, having already covered more distance than most players at around 100.83km.
The skipper also finds himself in the top 10 this season for passes, interceptions and blocks, showing he is not someone to be messed with on the pitch.

Coaching Sunderland’s next stars
The duties don’t stop just on the field.
Xhaka has recently observed an academy game and is currently undertaking his coaching badges, providing analysis and feedback to the under-21 players and coaching staff, acting as an elite-level mentor.
On this, he said: “I try to help the team with my experience on a daily basis.
“I am just waiting on my UEFA coaching license.”
This attitude has been felt strongly across the club and is a key reason this young Sunderland side has been able to perform so well.
Manager Regis Le Bris has stated Xhaka is “like a second coach on the pitch,” something this young side needs to cope with the Premier League demands.
With Xhaka’s experience, determination and clear mindset, it is no wonder the Black Cats are flying high.
